Workshop #1: Governance: setting the foundation for good business

Corporate governance is often associated with large publicly traded corporations. However, effective guidance and oversight for leaders applies for all businesses, sole proprietor, small business and large corporations alike. This session is the first in a series of workshops focusing on building better businesses. In addition to discussing best practices for governance, this session will introduce participants to analytics employed to measure its impact on workers, communities, customers, and the environment.
Participants attending this workshop will:
· Identify and discuss best governance practices for public and private companies
· Discuss how measuring impact provides opportunities to communicate contributions to stakeholders
· Review approaches for measuring business impact

Workshop Facilitator: Dr. Vanessa Hill
Vanessa Hill is an Associate Professor of Management at the B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration, University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She currently holds the Alexandre Theriot and Loretta Durand Theriot Board of Regents endowed professorship in Business Administration. Dr. Hill earned her B.A. in Sociology, Anthropology and Psychology from Swarthmore College; her M.S.I.A. and Ph.D. from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. Before joining the faculty at UL Lafayette, Dr. Hill served on faculties at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ and Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC. She holds two professional certifications in Human Resource Management: The Senior Certified Professional (SHRM – SCP) by the Society for Human Resource Management and the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by the Human Resource Certification Institute.
Dr. Hill currently teaches Human Resource Management, Leadership, and Business Ethics courses at the B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration at UL Lafayette. Her research interests include corporate social responsibility, business ethics, leadership, and workplace values. Her work has been published in Business and Society Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management History, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, International Journal of Management, and The Journal of Management Inquiry. Dr. Hill serves on the editorial review boards for the journals Business & Society and The Journal of Business Ethics. Dr. Hill’s scholarship and teaching is informed by civic and professional service. Dr. Hill has been an active member of the International Association of Business and Society (IABS) since 2001. She was inducted as a Fellow in the Society in 2018. Locally, Dr. Hill is a graduate of Leadership Lafayette Class XXV. She served on the Lafayette Public Library Board of Control, the Lafayette Public Library Foundation, and Girl Scouts of Louisiana, Pines to the Gulf.
